Camp Kyle Day 2
Overcast, cool and relatively uneventful on Day 2 of Utah Fall Football Camp at Rice Eccles Stadium. Whittingham liked the tempo and pace of practice today. It’s not where it needs to be yet but it’s coming. Whittingham feels that from a talent standpoint that the Utes are ready to play and compete at the high tempo pace of the Pac 12. He wasn’t ready to declare a winner in Day 2 of practice from either an offensive or defensive standpoint. He says that until the pads go on it’s hard to tell. Per the Head Coach there is no change in the QB battle still Wilson #1 (clear #1) and Thompson #2. Here’s Kyle Whittingham addressing the media after Day 2′s practice.
I spoke to Offensive Line Coach Jim Harding today after practice just to get a feel for where things are right now. Both Harding and Whittingham are pleased O-Line is right now from both a body type and philosophy standpoint. Harding says the guys bought in from Day 1 in the Spring Ball to both the weight loss and the new philosophy. Harding singled out Poutasi, Aiono and Salt as the guys with the most experience and a leg up on the rest of the line. He stopped short of guaranteeing them jobs. He said the real competition is on the right side of the offensive line. Though he’s not listed on the 2 deep right now, both Whittingham and Harding praised the play and improvement of Jackson Barton from the Spring. Here’s my post practice conversation with Jim Harding.
I picked the brain of Safeties Coach Morgan Scalley after Day 2. Scalley says that this group of safeties is best he’s been around as a player or coach in his more than 14 years at Utah. I asked Scalley about Tevin Carter and to compare him to someone that he’s played with or coached at Utah and his response was surprising. He told me that in his time at Utah, they’ve never had a player with the combination of size, speed and athleticism like what Carter brings to the Safety position. Though nothing is for sure at this point in time, it would be a major upset if Tevin Carter and Brian Blechen are the starting safeties against Idaho St. Scalley told me that both Marcus Williams and Bryan Allen have made the transition to safety well so far and that freshman Andre Godfrey looks good too. Here’s my full conversation with Morgan Scalley following Day 2 of Fall Camp.
News and Notes
1. He may be young and may be raw but I would be shocked if Lowell Lotulelei doesn’t make an impact on the defensive line this season. At 6-1 and 310 pounds he’s got the frame and a couple of coaches I’ve spoken too rave about his poetential.
2. He may not be getting much love right now from his Coaches, but Connor Manning continues to put in the work. Manning staying at least 45 minutes after practice today working on his drops and throws. He also continues to be extremely accurate in his limited practice work.
3. The Utes continue Camp Kyle on Wednesday morning at 9am. All practices and scrimmages continue to be closed to the general public. Double Days begin on Saturday.
